Softball’s experimental double first base rule is approved by the panel

For the 2022–2023 academic year, double first base will be used experimentally in NCAA softball games. The batter-runner may utilize one side of the base under the experimental regulation, which the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel authorized on Thursday, while the fielder may use the other.

To use the double first base during regular-season spring games or fall contests played in the non-traditional season, both sides must consent. Later, as part of the experimental rule, base specifications and detailed guidelines for using the base will be included. The NCAA Softball Rules Committee will specify the particular data points that schools must gather and file a waiver request if they decide to implement this experimental regulation. The panel agreed that padding must be installed by January 1, 2027, to all sideline and home run fences made of wood, concrete, or brick. The panel recommended include all hard surfaces as well.
