Women’s basketball NIT-style tournament approved by NCAA Council

The reinstatement of high school male summer basketball academies and recruiting events was authorized by the NCAA Division I Council on Wednesday. The first-ever girls high school basketball academy event was also approved, along with its formation. The Council also approved a plan for a second postseason tournament for women’s college basketball, with a March 2024 start date as the aim. The clearances were first announced by CBS Sports earlier on Wednesday.

The multi-million dollar expenditures associated with that event require the approval of the NCAA Board of Directors. On October 25, the Board of Directors will get together in person in Indianapolis. The academies continue to be a contentious issue in college basketball. Before the COVID-19 epidemic, in the summer of 2019, the NCAA hosted its inaugural boys basketball academies at four different locations throughout the nation. The Rice Commission recommended issuing the instruction.
