World Cup Betting: Nigeria vs Argentina Odds

Argentina was the popular pick to win Group F at the World Cup and even though they haven’t played their best, they’re in the driver’s seat. They wrap up the group stage against Nigeria, who are two points behind and a stunning win would give them the top spot, but their attacking style could play into Argentina’s hands.

World Cup Odds: Argentina -185, Nigeria +725, Draw +265

Why Nigeria Can Win

Nigeria has one foot in the next round after their 1-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina, and they won’t show Argentina any fear when they meet on Wednesday. They have experienced players throughout the squad, led at the back by captain Vincent Enyeama in goal, while Joseph Yobo will earn his 100th cap for his country if he plays in this game. Peter Odemwingie scored against Bosnia-Herzegovina and he sparked the team as a sub in their goalless draw with Iran, while Jon Obi Mikel was afforded a little more time and space than he was in the first game.

It’ll be interesting to see how Nigeria approaches this game as they only need a point to get to the knockout stage for the first time since 1998 in France. They do like to attack, but they have to be careful because Argentina is still Argentina.

Why Argentina Can Win

Argentina has yet to put together their best effort, but as long as Lionel Messi is around, they have a chance to win any game. He has scored the winning goal in both matches so far and they have been moments of individual brilliance, which you come to expect from the captain. Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran have tried to man-mark Messi and the latter even tried to put multiple players on him in order to keep him out of the game, but all he needs is a glimpse and you will be left with your hands up.

However, his teammates have to step up and help their talisman. Sergio Aguero hasn’t done anything in this tournament and Gonzalo Higuain has been inconsistent. Angel Di Maria did well in the first half against Iran, then he started getting double-teamed. The defense had to get bailed out by Sergio Romero more than once against Iran and they didn’t look great against Bosnia-Herzegovina, either. Argentina is still one of the World Cup favorites because of Messi, but they have to find another gear soon before their competition gets more difficult.

Outlook

Argentina has won four and drawn one of their six meetings with Nigeria, and they’ve won all three World Cup meetings in 1998, 2002 and 2010 by a one-goal margin. Nigeria will get a boost from a 4-1 win in a 2011 friendly, but if they are smart, they will rein in their attacking instincts in this game. Argentina can be easily frustrated and regardless of the outcome in the other Group F match, a point will get them through to the next round. They should sit back and try to hit Argentina on the counter if they can.

Pick: Draw
