Women Wrestlers Take Over; A League of Their Own Celebrates 25

women wrestlers

Did you hear that there’s a women wrestlers revolution taking over? Let me tell you about it. First, the WWE Divas, drop the term ‘divas’ from their matches and get well-deserved star treatment with matches that highlight pay-per-views. Then, I posted the other day how there’s GLOW, a new Netflix show about women wrestlers that will premiere on June 23, all about 1980s women’s wrestling. But, wait, there’s more (women wrestlers)!

Well, now there’s WOW,  back for a fifth season, which is the based off the popular show, Women Of Wrestling. This show is coming from producer Mark Burnett — you probably know him from his other wildly successful shows Survivor, Shark Tank, and The Voice, just to name a few. He is partnering with Jeanie Buss, who you might know as the owner and president of the Los Angeles Lakers.

If you’ve never heard of Women of Wrestling, or WOW, before, it’s about WOW Superheroes – “a diversified group of athletic women wrestlers who are over-the-top characters, villains and heroines that include the notorious tag team, Caged Heat, Delta Lotta Pain and Loca, The Governor’s Daughter, Abilene Maverick, The Dagger and newcomer, The Alpha Athlete, and Adrenaline.”

Emmy Award®- winning Burnett and his team of producers headed by President of Unscripted Programming for MGM Television, Barry Poznick, will work in tandem with WOW’s Founder and President, David McLane, the impresario behind the ’80s hit women’s wrestling television series, the Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling (GLOW), to create content for potential use across networks, digital platforms, cable and multicast networks.

“By challenging the status quo in transforming women’s wrestling for the past two years, we feel WOW is now positioned for tremendous growth,” said WOW Owner Jeanie Buss in a statement released by Buss.

If you also didn’t know, Burnett is also behind the wildly successful wrestling show Lucha Underground, so this isn’t his first rodeo, er, match.

(Hey, if you’re new to Lucha Underground too, one of our other Get More Sports writers, Travis Brinkley, recaps the episodes for you here.)

“Barry and I witnessed first-hand the enormous global fan base of professional wrestling with our team’s production of Lucha Underground,”  Burnett noted. “We were looking to expand on our experience doing Lucha, and WOW felt like a natural progression in the space.  We love what Jeanie has developed and share in her vision of transforming this entertainment landscape. Together, we will look to elevate the WOW brand through creative production and enhanced character-driven storytelling.”

This is MGM Television’s third partnership in the sports arena with Lucha Underground in its third season and its previously announced partnership with the Drone Racing League.

Pssst….I always knew that women were superheroes.

Check this article out…

Speaking of incredible women, this one isn’t a wrestler, but I loved this article from Bustle about how Penny Marshall (one of my favorite people ever) brought A League of Their Own, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, to the big screen. I always say ‘thank goodness for Penny Marshall,’ and that’s why.

So if you haven’t heard of A League of Their Own and you call yourself a fan of sports and movies, then you have a job to do this weekend. Buy the anniversary edition of the movie this weekend and watch it. You’ll find out why people always yell, “There’s no crying in baseball!”

But go ahead and laugh. The film, which stars the legendary Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna is being re-released to mark its 25th anniversary.

Tom Hanks plays Jimmy Dugan, a washed-up ballplayer whose big league days have ended. AFter the men go to war, Dugan decides to coach in the All-American Girls Baseball League of 1943.

It’s a fantastic movie and one that you can watch as a family.

If you want to learn more about the movie and Geena Davis’ thoughts on female sports movies, check out this awesome interview with her for Glamour magazine.

And don’t forget that you have a job to do this weekend. Go watch A League of Their Own.
