Berkeley, California — Socceroos midfielder Cameron Devlin said any choice about his future at Hearts will wait until after the FIFA World Cup, with the Scottish club season’s painful finish still fresh. Devlin marked his 28th birthday in Australian camp a day after returning to the national side as a second-half substitute in the 1-1 draw with Switzerland.
The midfielder earned a World Cup roster spot following a strong season in which he was among Hearts’ standout performers as the club mounted a late push to end Celtic and Rangers’ dominance in the Scottish top flight. Devlin joined Tynecastle in 2021; his contract was set to run through the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign.
A report from the Edinburgh News suggested three MLS clubs are tracking Devlin. Hearts have already lost captain Lawrence Shankland to Rangers this offseason. Devlin said he and Hearts coach Derek McInnes remain in regular contact, but he does not want transfer speculation to distract from World Cup preparations.
He described the final day of the Premiership — when Hearts, top of the table before the match, needed only a draw at Celtic to claim their first title since 1960 — as a bitter ending. A 3-1 defeat in Glasgow, followed by a pitch invasion that brought the game to an early close and forced players and staff to leave the stadium hurriedly, left players and supporters reeling. Devlin said the scenes left a “sour taste” on what had otherwise been a special season.
For now, Devlin’s attention is on Australia’s opening World Cup match against Türkiye in Vancouver on Saturday evening. He forms part of a midfield group that includes Jackson Irvine, Aiden O’Neill and Paul Okon Jr., and has told ESPN he is willing to occupy any role required. After gaining minutes against Switzerland, Devlin said he is hungry for more opportunities to contribute to the national side.
