Lakers Set to Hire Frank Vogel, Two Game Sevens On Deck, and More

Leave it to the Los Angeles Lakers to steal the spotlight away from the playoffs with two Game Sevens set for Sunday. On Saturday evening, word broke that the Lakers were set to hire Frank Vogel to replace Luke Walton as their head coach. Vogel last coached the Orlando Magic, but he will have a lot more talent to work with in La La Land.

A Woj Bomb shook up a Saturday without any NBA games. Late Saturday, Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Frank Vogel had agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Lakers. We had heard that the two sides were set to meet again sometime in the future on Friday, but they needed just one more day to reach an agreement. Vogel spent 10 years as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, and Indiana Pacers before taking over as the Pacers’ head coach in 2011. He coached Indiana for six seasons and Orlando for two years, and this will be his first foray outside the Eastern Conference.

LeBron James’ former team is in the market for a new head coach too. Cleveland is taking its time in order to find the right coach, and general manager Koby Altman has been a busy man. The Cavaliers have interest in at least seven different coaches.

The Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers are set to square off for a spot in the Western Conference Finals this afternoon. The winner will be a hefty underdog against the Golden State Warriors, but these teams were doubted coming into the postseason and they both relish the role of underdog.

The Toronto Raptors and Philadelphia 76ers will play the second Game 7 of the day shortly after Denver and Portland finish up. Toronto is in the Eastern Conference Semifinals for the fourth straight season, but they have failed to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals the last two times.

Finally, let’s look at a heartwarming story this Mother’s Day. LeBron James continues to do great things off the court, donating another $1 million to his I Promise School in Akron. The school is designed to help third and fourth grade students that are considered behind in critical academic areas.
