Jets’ Super Bowl Odds Take a Dive With Kirk Cousins

Kirk Cousins

We’re less than a month away from the start of the NFL’s free agency period and we already have some rampant speculation as to where the top stars might land. The biggest prize in the pool appears to be former Washington Redskins quarterback, Kirk Cousins, who could very well end up becoming the highest paid player in NFL history when he signs with his new team. The question is which team will that be?

On Monday, ESPN reported that the New York Jets are set to do whatever it takes to get Cousins. After a surprising 5-11 season – better than the critics expected – the Jets feel they are much closer to being a competitor in the AFC. They have the cap space to make it happen as they have at least $73 million to work with.

Currently, the Jets are at 90/1 to win Super Bowl LIII at BetDSI Sportsbook and only one team has worse odds (the Cleveland Browns at 100/1). However, finding a quarterback could significantly improve their standing. The Jets defense is respectable, and they have enough cap space to acquire Cousins and another weapon or two.

The general assumption is that the Denver Broncos are currently the favorite to land Cousins. The quarterback has publicly stated that he’d like to play where there’s a solid defense and where he can conceivably compete for a championship. The Broncos are just a couple of years removed from being Super Bowl champions, and while their defense fell off the map in 2017 the general consensus is that the team’s crippling quarterbacking is what led to it.

A quality quarterback could solve a lot of this team’s problems. The issue is that the Broncos have just under $30 million in cap space to work with and Cousins would take up almost all of that. Is he really all they need or can they maneuver to acquire him and make a couple of other small changes?

The Jets are currently at 90/1 and would likely land in the 70/1 odds range if they acquired Cousins. As for the Broncos, they’re currently at 35/1 and would get a bump up to 20/1 if they signed Cousins. Other teams expected to be in the mix are the Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals and Buffalo Bills.
