Most fans have counted the Houston Rockets out in the race to land LeBron James in free agency. The Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers are now the overwhelming favorites. The Rockets, however, have not given up yet.

In fact, the team is still “all-in” on landing LeBron, according to a report from USA Today’s Sam Amick. Amick provided an update on the LeBron sweepstakes after Monday’s NBA Awards.

“While Houston is considered a longshot to land James, that isn’t about to keep Rockets general manager/newly-named Executive of the Year Daryl Morey from trying,” Amick writes. “According to a person with knowledge of their situation, the Rockets are still all in on pursuing James – even if (James) Harden made it clear that it was hardly a necessity.”

As Amick references, Harden has said he won’t be recruiting LeBron. Why? Well, for one: the Rockets think they could contend for a title without LeBron. But additionally: Harden doesn’t think LeBron needs recruitment — the King knows where he wants to go.

Echoing that theory, a report Monday stated LeBron does not want to hear recruiting pitches.

“James might meet or speak with a club official or owner at some point, but the elaborate presentations that have become common in NBA free agency over the years are unnecessary after 15 seasons in the league,” ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported.

Pundits expect LeBron to announce his decision in the relatively near future. Don’t expect him to hold off until after Independence Day.
