The Vegas Golden Knights returned to NHL action on Wednesday missing several key contributors who had just taken part in the Olympic gold-medal game. As the team traveled to face the Los Angeles Kings, multiple players from both the United States and Canadian national teams were unavailable for the matchup.
Vegas had already ruled out center Jack Eichel and defenseman Noah Hanifin, both members of the United States squad that captured the Olympic championship. Neither player accompanied the team for the road game as they recovered and transitioned back from international play to the NHL schedule.
In addition to their U.S. Olympians, the Golden Knights were also without three important members of Team Canada. Forwards Mark Stone and Mitch Marner, along with defenseman Shea Theodore, did not travel with the club for the contest in Los Angeles. All three played central roles for Canada during the Olympic tournament and were coming off the intensity of a gold-medal showdown.
The absence of Eichel, Hanifin, Stone, Marner, and Theodore left Vegas short-handed at both forward and defense. Eichel is a top-line center and a primary offensive driver, while Stone and Marner are impact forwards capable of influencing games at both ends of the ice. On the back end, Hanifin and Theodore normally log significant minutes and contribute to the transition game and power play.
With five regulars unavailable, the Golden Knights were forced to adjust their forward lines and defensive pairings and to rely on depth players in expanded roles. The coaching staff faced the challenge of managing ice time across the lineup, compensating for the loss of high-end skill, and maintaining structure against a divisional opponent.
The timing of the Olympic break and the quick turnaround back to NHL competition placed added focus on player workload and recovery, particularly for those involved in the medal rounds. For Vegas, the priority was reintegrating its Olympians carefully while remaining competitive in the standings. As the Golden Knights resumed their schedule, they did so with the expectation that their returning stars would rejoin the lineup once ready following their international commitments.
