Twins’ Kepler Drives in Tying Run Twice, Then Hits Walk-Off

Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

It was quite an unexpectedly eventful day to be a Max in Major League Baseball on Tuesday. The Twins’ Max Kepler didn’t start, but he entered the game in the sixth inning as a pinch hitter and finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs and a home run in Minnesota’s marathon victory over the Red Sox. Max Scherzer was taking batting practice … when he broke his nose. And there are no Maxes involved, but the White Sox’s crosstown victory over the Cubs was eventful for plenty of other reasons.

Max Kepler twice drove in the tying run — once in the eighth inning, once in the 13th — and then beat Boston in the 17th. What a night.

We can joke about it because he’s going to be OK, but what a scary moment for Max Scherzer. Of course, Scherzer is also one of the toughest guys out there and might start Wednesday anyway.

Cole Hamels was terrific and notched career strikeout No. 2,500 for the Cubs, but the White Sox had reason to celebrate the most Tuesday after Eloy Jimenez — a former Cubs prospect — launched a go-ahead home run in the ninth inning.
