The comeback capped a weekend in which the Mets rebounded from a difficult start. Less than 48 hours earlier the club dropped the opener and learned that right-hander Clay Holmes suffered a fractured right fibula, an injury that occurred when Spencer Jones hit a comebacker off Holmes’ leg, per the report. Manager Carlos Mendoza said the diagnosis “felt different,” the report adds.
The Yankees had built a 5-1 lead in the sixth inning, taking advantage of Mets miscues, including a routine popup that shortstop Bo Bichette failed to handle, according to the report. New York’s bullpen helped the Mets stay alive: former Yankees reliever Luke Weaver escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh during Saturday’s win, and Mets closer Devin Williams induced an inning-ending double play in the 10th on Sunday, the report says.
Taylor entered Sunday as a reserve outfielder known more for defense and had struggled against right-handers this season, hitting 6-for-42 with no home runs and a .348 OPS before his pinch-hit opportunity, per the report. He jumped on a first-pitch curveball from Bednar, tucking the drive just inside the left-field foul pole. Taylor said, “Awesome. That’s all I can say.
