World Cup Betting Odds:  Germany and the United States play on Thursday in Group G action and it could be that both teams will advance to the round of 16.  Both teams will advance if this match ends in a draw and there is a good chance each could advance even if they lose.  Let’s take a look at Germany vs. United States including the history between the teams.

Germany Favored

Germany is listed as a -145 favorite on the three-way line in World Cup betting odds.  The draw is also getting a lot of action and it is only +170. Normally the draw would be well over 2-1 but because there is the feeling that each team could play for a draw, the odds are lower.

Germany vs. USA History

Germany is 6-3 all-time vs. the United States. They have outscored the USA by a combined 21-15. The two teams have met six times in friendlies and three times in serious competition. Germany has won both of the previous World Cup meetings as they won 2-0 in 1998 and 1-0 in 2002.

Will the Teams Play for a Draw?

Many people have been asking the two coaches whether they will simply play for a draw. Both coaches have taken the party line and said their teams will play to win but that remains to be seen.  United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann and Germany coach Joachim Loew are close friends but each is saying their teams will go all out for the win. “We have that fighting spirit, and we give everything in every game,” said Klinsmann, “We will go to Recife and we will give everything to beat Germany. That is our goal.”

Scenarios

If either the USA or Germany wins they are in the knockout round and a draw will also get both teams in. Germany is almost assuredly in even with a loss as they have a superior goal differential. The USA is also in decent shape as it would take a loss and a two goal win by Ghana or a loss and a great win by Portugal to eliminate them.
