Kevin Durant acquired a minority stake in New Jersey/New York Gotham FC

Kevin Durant, a two-time NBA champion, has been designated a minority owner of NJ/NY Gotham FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), the team announced Wednesday. Thirty-Five Ventures (35V), co-founded by Brooklyn Nets star and entrepreneur Rich Kleiman, becomes the club’s third investor since March.

Durant is the latest sports icon to acquire a minority ownership share in the NWSL club, following ex-US women’s national team player Carli Lloyd’s acquisition of a minority investment six months after retiring from the game. The NBA player will join a group of investors led by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and his wife, Tammy. Kristin Bernert, Karen Bryant, and Ed Nalbandian are the other minority owners.

“As a New York-based firm, partnering with a forward-thinking organization like Gotham FC was a no-brainer,” 35V co-founder Rich Kleiman stated in a news release. “The NWSL has had tremendous growth in recent years, and the opportunity to contribute to that progress and work directly with the Gotham FC management team and players is really exciting.”

“This is another significant step forward for our franchise,” Nalbandian continued. Kevin and Rich are two of the most powerful figures in sports, and their achievements in business and entertainment, as well as their major investment in Gotham FC, exemplify our club’s potential. They will be invaluable assets to the team in a variety of areas, and we are delighted to welcome them to the Gotham FC family.” On May 14, Gotham will host its inaugural home match of the 2022 season against the North Carolina Courage.
