MLB Celebrates Father’s Day, Maldonado Wears a Tie and More

Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

Fathers Day in Major League Baseball is special. There’s no other way to put it. It’s special for the fans, the players, the umpires and, of course, the dads. In most cases, it was Dad who introduced their boys to this great game, and there’s nothing better for a Major Leaguer than to repay that with a thank you on Fathers Day. Of course, if you’re Royals catcher Martin Maldonado, Fathers Day can be an excuse to say thanks AND look fashionable. Elsewhere on Sunday, the Padres rallied again and said good-bye to their franchise’s all-time great again.

Thanks to all the dads out there. There are few baseball traditions quite as special as pink bats and gloves on Mothers Day and all the thank-yous on Fathers Day.

Martin Maldonado went one step further, rocking the Fathers Day tie over his chest protector. He went 3 for 4, too, so this might not be the last you see of the tie.

The Padres remembered one of baseball’s great tragedies Sunday: The 5-year anniversary of the too-young death of Tony Gwynn.

Maybe Tony was looking down on the Padres this weekend, as they erased a three-run deficit in the ninth inning to win Sunday — two days after erasing a six-run deficit in the ninth to win Friday, too.

The Dodgers’ win over the Cubs on Sunday was all about late dramatics, but it also was another great start for Hyun-Jin Ryu, who continues to pitch out of his mind.
