Texas Tech News: Alan Bowman Out Several Weeks

For the second straight season, Red Raiders quarterback Alan Bowman will miss a significant amount of time due to a serious injury. On Monday, Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells told the media that Bowman would be out for several weeks after injuring his shoulder in a 28-14 loss to Arizona last Saturday.

The loss of Bowman is a big one for Texas Tech. The sophomore quarterback was the nation’s fourth-leading passer this season, and the injury will keep him out for most of the Red Raiders’ Big-12 slate.

It appears that Bowman sustained the injury in the third quarter of last Saturday’s tilt with Arizona. The quarterback went to the locker room for further tests after coming off the field, but he ended up returning to action and finished the day throwing 55 passes.

This is a tough break for Bowman as he will miss a substantial part of the season for the second straight season. Last year, Bowman was the back-up quarterback to McLane Carter at the start of the year, but he ended up becoming the starter after Carter suffered a high ankle sprain. Bowman went on to torch Houston in Week 3, throwing for more than 600 yards against the Cougars, but he suffered a partially collapsed lung against West Virginia the following week. He returned three weeks later before his lung collapsed once again, and the Red Raiders shut him down for the year after a second occurrence.

With Bowman out for the foreseeable future, Jett Duffey will step into the starter’s role. Duffey saw a lot of action last year, completing 104 of 154 passes for 1,221 yards with eight touchdowns and six interceptions. The Red Raiders have a bye this week to help Duffey get some first-team reps, but they must travel to Norman to take on the Oklahoma Sooners the following week.

If only Texas Tech could borrow the greatest quarterback in program history for that game.
