The United States Golf Association (USGA) has introduced new honors bearing the name of Tiger Woods for two of its premier amateur championships, further highlighting the legacy of one of the sport’s most influential players.
Beginning this year, the winner of the U.S. Amateur Championship will be awarded the Tiger Woods Medal. In addition, the champion of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will receive the Tiger Woods Trophy. The USGA’s decision ties one of the game’s most prestigious amateur events, and its top junior competition, to a player whose early success in those very arenas helped launch a historic professional career.
Tiger Woods built much of his early reputation in USGA championships. As an amateur, he won the U.S. Junior Amateur three consecutive times from 1991 through 1993, becoming the first player to achieve that feat. He followed that run by winning three straight U.S. Amateur titles from 1994 through 1996. Those performances marked him as a standout talent long before he joined the professional ranks and began winning major championships around the world.
The U.S. Amateur is widely regarded as the premier men’s amateur event in the United States, with a history that stretches back to the 19th century. Many of golf’s greatest players competed in the championship before moving on to professional success. By affixing Woods’ name to the winner’s medal, the USGA is linking future champions to that tradition of excellence and to one of the event’s most famous winners.
The U.S. Junior Amateur, meanwhile, serves as a proving ground for elite junior players. Earning the Tiger Woods Trophy will symbolize not only a national title, but also a connection to a player who once stood in the same place as a teenage champion. Woods’ dominance at the junior level remains a benchmark for young golfers striving to progress through the amateur ranks.
With these changes, the USGA is formally recognizing Woods’ impact on amateur golf and his enduring influence on new generations of players. As future winners of the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Junior Amateur lift the Tiger Woods Medal and Tiger Woods Trophy, they will join a lineage that traces back to one of the most decorated amateur careers in the history of the sport.
