2017 ATP Ricoh Open Preview

ricoh open

The 2017 Ricoh Open is the ATP Tour stop in Rosmalen in The Netherlands. This has also been known as ‘s-Hertogenbosch or Den Bosch. This is a regular and established event on the grass-court circuit. A solid field will convene in the attempt to begin to get needed practice for Wimbledon in three weeks.

If you’re unfamiliar with tennis betting, it’s worth noting that this event signals the end of the clay court season and the start of the grass court part of the calendar. The players will be finding their feet as we build up to the start of Wimbledon.

The competition in the 32-player main draw begins on Monday, June 12.

Player Info:

Juan Martin del Potro is currently ranked number 30 in the world, but is still working on a successful comeback after his long-lasting wrist injury. In his case, a successful comeback is a return to the top 10 of the rankings. The former world number four and 2009 U.S. Open Champion keeps on facing top stars as early as the third round of tournaments. That is exactly why his growth is stagnant. Del Potro should win such events (250 pointers) in order to climb up the ranking ladder. The field in Rosmalen, though, is deep and he’ll have to play extremely well to win the title. Del Potro reached the semifinals in 2008 here, but David Ferrer spoiled his party by trouncing him in straight sets.

Will the big man finally take his giant stride forward? If he doesn’t, he’ll be in danger of facing another top star in the Wimbledon third round.

Like Del Potro, Marin Cilic is also a U.S. Open champion, and is now an established top-10 member. The tall Croatian is coming to The Netherlands on the back of a quarterfinal run at the the French Open– his best result on the Parisian clay. If Cilic can cause damage on clay, imagine the carnage he can cause on grass. The player with the explosive serve has reached quarterfinals at Wimbledon the past three years and is always a huge threat on grass.

Cilic played once before in Rosmalen. In 2006, he was beaten in the opening round by Tommy Robredo. Cilic is altogether a different player today– more confident and more dangerous. He is the top seed, loves grass, is the in-form player, and is expected to win the title. Anything short of a final appearance will be a big disappointment.

Alexander Zverev announced himself on the world stage by hammering Novak Djokovic in the Rome finals and lifting his first Masters 1000 trophy. Much was expected of Zverev in Paris but in the first round, he came up short against a spirited and a far superior Fernando Verdasco. It wasn’t a tragedy; it was a learning curve.

Zverev, at just 20 years of age, has already proved he can play on grass. Last year he made the finals of the grass-court tournament in Halle and in doing so, defeated Roger Federer in the semifinals of the ATP 500 tournament. This year the German player has won three titles– Rome, Munich and Montpellier. There is no reason why he can’t win in Rosmalen. He doesn’t get overawed by the occasion nor does he feel intimidated when he is up against big stars.
