The Boston Bruins honored one of the most iconic players in franchise history on Thursday night by retiring the No. 33 jersey of defenseman Zdeno Chara. The ceremony took place at TD Garden in Boston prior to the Bruins’ home game against the Seattle Kraken.
Chara, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2023, served as the Bruins’ captain for 14 seasons from 2006 to 2020. Known for his towering 6-foot-9 frame, powerful shot, and leadership on and off the ice, Chara became a cornerstone of the Bruins’ identity during his tenure with the team. He played 1,023 regular-season games for Boston and logged an additional 150 playoff appearances in the team’s uniform.
A key moment in Chara’s Bruins career came in 2011, when he captained the team to its first Stanley Cup championship in 39 years. Under his leadership, the Bruins also reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2013 and 2019. Chara’s defensive prowess earned him the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenseman in 2009, and he was named to multiple All-Star teams throughout his career.
During the pregame ceremony, tributes from former teammates, coaches, executives, and family members highlighted Chara’s contributions to the franchise and the city. The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of his No. 33 banner, which now hangs permanently alongside those of Bruins greats such as Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque, and Cam Neely.
Chara thanked fans, teammates, and the organization in an emotional speech, reflecting on his years in Boston and the impact the city had on his life and career. The night marked not only a celebration of Chara’s achievements on the ice but also his lasting legacy as a leader and community figure.
Chara retired from professional hockey in 2022 after a 24-season NHL career that also included stints with the New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators, and Washington Capitals. However, he will be most remembered for his time as a Bruin, where he shaped the team’s culture and performance for more than a decade.
