Lucha Underground S1E27 Recap: Johnny Mundo Snaps

Photo from El Rey Network

On last week’s episode of Lucha Underground, there were three great matches, the debut of Delavar Daivari, and some questionable actions from Hernandez. Two thirds of the Trios Champions, Son of Havoc and Angélico (accompanied by an injured Ivelisse), took on the team of Mr. Cisco and Cortez Castro of The Crew (accompanied by Bael). Bael would provide a distraction leading to the Cisco and Castro picking up the victory.

In tag team action, Dario Cueto paired up Lucha Underground Champion Prince Puma with Hernandez to take on the team of Cage and King Cuerno. During the match, Hernandez, the #1 Contender to Prince Puma’s Lucha Underground Championship, would turn on his partner, powerboming him onto the ring apron to give Cage and King Cuerno the victory.

The main event of the evening was Alberto El Patron defeating Johnny Mundo. With the win over Johnny Mundo, Alberto El Patron faces Hernandez tonight to determine the #1 Contender to the Lucha Underground Championship.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Aerostar vs. Jack Evans
Aerostar hasn’t been seen since he lost to Drago in the final battle of their “Best of 5” series, which has been some sort of a blessing for Aerostar. Since Drago won the “Best of 5” series, he ended up being banned from the temple permanently, whereas Aerostar is still around. Jack Evans is new to Lucha Underground, but according to Vampiro and Matt Striker, he is a lucha libre veteran who has been successful in AAA (He has won the AAA Tag Team Championship with Lucha Underground Trios Champion Angélico).

Jack Evans gets a lot of impressive offense in, but Aerostar picks up a much needed win after hitting Evans with the Canadian Destroyer from the top turnbuckle. Winner: Aerostar

A frustrated Big Ryck is backstage with The Mack, who was part of his team in the Trios Championship tournament. Big Ryck says that the wrestling business is good for money, and for the right money he would fight anybody.

Killshot vs. The Mack vs. Pentagon Jr. vs. Sexy Star vs. Cage vs. King Cuerno vs. Fenix
Dario Cueto exits his office to announce that the winner of this match will win one of the seven Aztec medallions. Cueto notes that the Aztec medallions will give the winner a chance at immortality. If this opportunity is anything like the opportunities that Dario Cueto has offered in the past, there is a chance that this could be great, or incredibly risky.

Each luchador in this match has a good chance at winning the match. There are luchadores focused on speed and agility (Fenix and Killshot), some focused more on strength with a touch of agility (The Mack, Cage), and there are some wild cards (Sexy Star, Pentagon Jr., King Cuerno).

Fenix hits Pentagon Jr. with an inverted Frankensteiner followed up by a standing moonsault to pick up the win, as well as earn the first of seven Aztec medallions. Winner: Fenix

Backstage Segment
The Trios Champions, Angélico, Son of Havoc, and an injured Ivelisse are in Dario Cueto’s office regarding their Trios Championships. Since Mr. Cisco and Cortez Castro defeated Angélico and Son of Havoc last week, Dario Cueto has given them a championship opportunity. Next week, The Crew will take on the Trios Champions in a ladder match for the Trios Championship. The advantage is in The Crew’s favor, considering that Ivelisse is currently dealing with a leg injury.

Catrina finds Fenix backstage, and tells him that he fell into her trap. Since Fenix buried Mil Muertes in a coffin several weeks ago, Mil Muertes has been able to use this opportunity to be reborn, and stronger than ever.

Hernandez vs. Alberto El Patron – #1 Contender’s Match, No Disqualification (Lucha Underground Championship)
Hernandez earned the right to be the #1 Contender to the Lucha Underground Championship after defeating Cage and King Cuerno in a triple threat match two weeks ago. Alberto El Patron and Johnny Mundo convinced Dario Cueto otherwise, which has led to El Patron getting an opportunity at becoming the #1 Contender tonight.

During the match, Johnny Mundo attacks Alberto El Patron from behind, and sends him through the window leading into Dario Cueto’s office. Hernandez takes advantage, covering a bloodied Alberto El Patron to pick up an easy victory. Winner, and NEW #1 Contender: Hernandez

This episode of Lucha Underground ends with Alberto El Patron being taken out on a stretcher, with Johnny Mundo’s motives unknown.
