Photo Gallery: Coveted Cubs Prospect Kyle Schwarber Gets Hit In Head With Bat, Returns To Hit Home Run

Chicago Cubs top prospect Kyle Schwarber is examined by the team's trainer and Smokies manager Buddy Bailey Monday night. at Smokies Park in Kodak, Tenn.

It’s the kind of moment that can define a young career. Chicago Cubs preseason No. 3 prospect Kyle Schwarber was behind the plate in the top of the sixth inning Monday night for the Double-A Tennessee Smokies when he took a shot to the head from the Chattanooga Lookouts’ Heiker Meneses.

With two outs already on the board, Schwarber held it together long enough to pick up the dropped third strike and make the throw to first base for the third out of the half-inning. It appeared Schwarber’s day was done at that point, but up next in the batting order, Schwarber didn’t leave the game. Instead, he got doctored up in the dugout and took his at-bat and immediately hit a home run, his third of the year.

The Smokies would end up losing the game 5-3, despite Schwarber’s efforts.
