Ravens Get Good News on Perriman; Cowboys Lose McFadden for a While

Perriman will finally make his Ravens debut this season.

So many times the knee evaluation of a possible ACL tear and reconstruction is bad news. But for the Baltimore Ravens and wide receiver Breshad Perriman, they beat the odds. The Ravens found out Tuesday that Perriman will not require ACL reconstruction on his left knee, meaning he’ll get to play this season.

Monday Perriman had arthroscopic surgery to check on the ACL and it turns out it wasn’t torn at all. Dr. James Andrews finished the scope and then injected stem cells into Perriman’s knee to help it heal.

The 22-year-old wideout has yet to play a down in the NFL since the Ravens drafted him out of the University of Central Florida last season. That should change now and, man, do the Ravens need him.

Monday wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. revealed that he’s not fully healed from the torn Achilles he suffered in Week eight last year. Smith Sr. had planned on retiring after last season, but decided to come back after missing half the season due to injury. Now he has no idea when that will be.

“I don’t know when I’m coming back,” Smith told ESPN. “I just know I have to be able to do something in training camp to be able to play for the season. That’s just the way I operate. I can’t go from doing absolutely nothing, sitting on my butt for all of training camp, and then go out there and play.”

Smith Sr. is 37 years old and was heading toward a terrific season last year in the seven full games he played in. He caught 46 passes for 670 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 95.7 yards per game.

“I’m just taking it one day at a time,” Smith said. ” Allowing my injury to heal and strengthen myself. I’m trying to be methodical and patient, which I’m not any of those. So it’s been good. If gives me a different perspective.”

Cowboys’ McFadden hurt in accident at home

His injury history is legendary at this point, but Dallas Cowboys running back Darren McFadden has outdone himself this time. After making it through two straight seasons mostly healthy he hurt his elbow in an accident at his own house. The injury required surgery to fix and will keep McFadden up on blocks for at least two months.

McFadden played in all 16 games for the Cowboys last season and was one of the few bright spots in an abysmal season. McFadden carried the ball a career-high 239 times for 1,089 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 4.6 yards per carry. It was only McFadden’s second 1,000-yard season and second season where he played in every game.

The Cowboys weren’t fooled and still drafted Ezekiel Elliott out of Ohio State with the No. 4 pick in April’s draft. McFadden should be a good back up for Elliott when he comes back and the Cowboys’ plans for the two shouldn’t change. It’s just crazy that McFadden finally makes it through a couple of seasons healthy and gets taken out by something in his kitchen.

Bills make some roster moves

Rex Ryan loves all his old players with the New York Jets and Monday he added another one to his Buffalo Bills’ roster. The Bills signed back up defensive end Leger Douzable, who played under Ryan with the Jets for two seasons.

The Bills cut a couple of undrafted rookies to make the move, former Fresno State defensive end Claudell Louis and Rutgers offensive tackle Keith Lumpkin.

Douzable is in his ninth season in the league. He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of UCF back in 2009 by the St. Louis Rams. He’s had a two-year stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars too. Douzable has never been more than a rotational player. He recorded career highs in tackles in 2011 with the Jags with 38 and sacks with the Jets in 2014 with 2.5.

Last year Ryan signed four former Jets to his team, including Jets offseason MVP Ik Enemkpali. He added fullback and Jets’ Hard Knocks star John Conner and back up quarterback Matt Simms.
