Redskins News: Joe Theismann Says Dwayne Haskins Isn’t Ready To Start

On Sunday, first-round pick out of Ohio State Dwayne Haskins got his feet wet against the New York Giants in a 24-3 Redskins loss. Furthermore, getting his feet wet is putting it kindly. Undeniably, Haskins looked shaky in his NFL debut. While completing 9 of 17 passes for 107 yards he also threw three interceptions.

Now, a very famous voice is weighing in with a heavy opinion on the next move the franchise is about to make at the position. Per TMZ, Joe Theismann is very outspoken against the Redskins beginning the future with Haskins in week five against the New England Patriots.

Moreover, Theismann thinks it would be a dismal decision to throw Haskins to the wolves; with Bill Belichick likely licking his chops to get a rookie signal caller as the opposition.

“You can’t start Dwayne Haskins against the New England Patriots,” Theisman said. “I mean, it can’t happen. It wouldn’t be good for him, it wouldn’t be good for the franchise, it wouldn’t be good for football for crying out loud.”

Now – it seems like right before an NFL coach is going to get fired – the panic button move is to go to the quarterback of the future. Without a doubt, Jay Gruden is on the hot seat in Washington after a winless beginning to the 2019 season. Thus far, the Redskins have failed to look competitive in most of their action. Surely, if Haskins can come out and get his way through a game without many hiccups; it could buy Gruden some time.

Currently, Gruden is non-committal about who will start at the position against New England. However, he wouldn’t rule out Haskins as the guy.

“I think I’ll figure that out, especially when I find out the true status of our quarterbacks that are banged up a little bit,” Gruden said. “Obviously, Colt coming back from his leg injury, if he’s 100 percent ready to go. Case, how he’s doing with his foot — he was in a boot after the game, precautionary reason.”

Soon, Gruden will need to ‘figure it out’. Once you have Hall of Fame type former players weighing in on current organizational decisions like this, you know chaos is running rampant.

Finally, it’s a lot of pressure to put on a physically talented young player from the jump. Perhaps this is why some organizations are successful time and again and others continue to flounder year after year. If Haskins was in an organization where he was able to sit and wait until the perfect moment to make his debut, it would give him the greatest chance at success. Instead, he may be asked to provide stability to a moribund franchise and save Gruden’s job in a short amount of time.
