NBA Commissioner Adam Silver acknowledged on Tuesday that the league is evaluating potential options to assist the Miami Heat in response to the ongoing situation involving guard Terry Rozier. Rozier remains on the Heat’s roster despite currently facing gambling-related charges, creating an unusual and challenging scenario for the organization.
Speaking to reporters, Silver described Rozier’s case as “unprecedented,” noting that it raises complex implications under the league’s existing rules and salary cap structure. While he did not commit to a specific course of action, Silver indicated that the NBA is actively reviewing the matter and will consider ways to offer Miami what he referred to as “satisfactory relief.”
“We want to be fair to all teams,” Silver said. “This is a unique circumstance, and our goal is to work through this in a thoughtful and appropriate way.”
Rozier was acquired by the Heat in a recent trade and has been a significant part of the team’s rotation. His current legal situation has left the club in a difficult position regarding both on-court performance and roster flexibility. Under normal circumstances, a player under contract but unable to play due to league discipline or legal proceedings continues to count against a team’s salary cap.
The NBA has addressed roster issues in the past when players were unavailable due to injury or off-court matters, typically through hardship exceptions or temporary salary cap adjustments. However, a case involving alleged violations tied to gambling presents new complications, especially given the league’s focus on integrity and its increased association with legal sports betting.
The Heat have not issued a formal request for relief, but league sources say Miami is in ongoing dialogue with the NBA office regarding the situation.
As the investigation into Rozier’s conduct continues, the league has not imposed any disciplinary action, and no timeline has been announced for a resolution. Silver emphasized that any decision will adhere to the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement and aim to maintain competitive balance.
More information is expected as the league gathers facts and determines next steps.
