Boxing Superfights 2016

Boxing Superfights 2016 – The Talk ‘n’ Shoot Boxing Podcast is back as we head into September.  For this, the #18 edition of the TnS Boxing Podcast, we are going to look a the remaining big fights for the 2016 calendar.

Gennady Golovkin vs Kell Brook – The first of this year’s remaining superfights pops up on September 10th at the O2 Arena in London as Kell Brook faces Gennady Golovkin. The bout is not on pay-per-view but on free HBO, and the broadcast will also include pound for pound kingpin Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez as he faces undefeated Carlos Cuadras at the Forum in California. Brook has a long time rivalry with Amir Khan and critics of this fight compare it to Khan’s recent challenge of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at middleweight, where he was KO’d at around the midway point of that fight. But that may be shortchanging Brook, who is a far better fighter than Amir Khan.

Saul Alvarez vs Liam Smith – The massive At&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas hosts HBO’s next pay-per-view on September 17th as Engand’s Liam Smith puts his WBO super welterweight belt on the line against Mexican superstar “Canelo.” Alvarez will be doing this fight on his name value alone, as Smith is a non-factor on the American and Mexican market.

Wladimir Klitschko vs Tyson Fury 2 – The rematch for the heavyweight titles in Fury’s possession is obstensibly scheduled for November in Manchester, and the “Gypsy King” stands to make a lot of money for this one if he can stay motivated enough to make the fight.Klitschko has been expressing doubt, saying he is getting a bad vibe from Fury’s camp. With this one supposedly happening in the Octboer or November time frame, an exact date is yet to be announced.

Also discussed was HBO’s recent shunning of Bob Arum and Top Rank’s fight between Manny Pacquiao and Jessie Vargas. What was Bob Arum thinking? He arrogantly went to PPV tossing around the Pac-man name and looking to land a November 5th date for his return.

Manny Pacquiao vs Jessie Vargas – Jessie Vargas beware. Vargas is a good fighter and like so many other guys who are looking to seperae themselves from the pack, Vatgas needs a big time fight to up his name recognition. Vargas will clear his biggest payday, but it is possible that fighting Pacquiao now will not have the same effect it did a few years back. The fight presentation by Arum has already been a fiasco, as most people would have preferred a different opponent.

Sergey Kovalev vs Andre Ward – What HBO was clearly doing was protecting their November 19th ppv between Kovalev and Ward. The truth is that of all the fights left this year that are of a big  “superfight” scale, the most intriguing and competitive match in the bunch is HBO’s Kovalev vs Ward fight. HBO is likely facing a PPV tha twill generate 250,000 buys or thereabouts, but they have not flinched or faltered in making this fight despte an obstacle filled road to make it happen.
