Herb Hand Takes a Vacation and BYU to the AAC?

Offensive line coaches aren’t usually known for their gregarious personalities, but Herb Hand has long been the exception to the rule. Hand is a beloved figure in the college football world, and the long-time offensive line coach is ready to vacation before the long grind of the season starts. He has had lots of success as an assistant with Tulsa, Vanderbilt, Penn State, and Auburn before coming to Texas to work under Tom Herman, and the offensive line improved mightily under his watch last season.

BYU is considered to be one of the top schools available if the AAC makes the decision to add a school to replace UConn. The Cougars have a national following and have no current conference affiliation in regards to their football program. That would make the transition simple in comparison to other schools, but does BYU really want to tie itself to a conference that isn’t a power conference again?

The Cougars abruptly left the Mountain West to go the independent route after feeling snubbed by major conferences earlier this decade. The AAC has a much more lucrative television deal than the Mountain West ever did, but BYU doesn’t seem too keen to take a perceived step down once again. They appear happy to follow the Notre Dame route as an independent, and I believe major conference affiliation is the only reason they would join a conference.

Former Florida State quarterback Deondre Francois is still looking to find a new home. There had been reports that Francois was headed to Florida Atlantic to play for Lane Kiffin, but those have since been dismissed. Francois may be close to enrolling at a school though. He visited Alabama State’s campus over the weekend, and he would be eligible immediately if he played for the Hornets. In an interesting twist, if he did play for Alabama State this season, he would return to Tallahassee. The Hornets are slated to play Florida State on November 16.
