Lucha Underground S1E4 Recap: Big Ryck, Big Impression

Photo from El Rey Network

On the previous episode of Lucha Underground, Dario Cueto introduced several new luchadors to The Temple. This included, El Mariachi Loco, Mascarita Sagrada, Drago, Pentagon Jr., and Fenix. All of these luchadors have been impressive, and have a bright future ahead of them.

Tonight features Johnny Mundo taking on Big Ryck. Mundo asked for this match last week on Lucha Underground because after earning the $100,000 offer that Dario Cueto gave on the first episode, Mundo and Prince Puma were attacked by Big Ryck and his cohorts, Cortez Castro and Cisco. The following week, Johnny Mundo and Prince Puma took on Cortez Castro and Cisco and picked up the victory.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network.

Sexy Star vs. Ivelisse
Two weeks ago, Chavo Guerrero ended up turning heel, attacking multiple luchadors and luchadores with a steel chair. During his rampage, Sexy Star ended up being in the middle of it. Now that she has recovered, she is back and ready for action.

Before the match starts, Ivelisse taunts Sexy Star, saying she does not deserve to compete with the men (which she has done twice so far; once in a singles match against Son of Havoc, and once in a tag team match with Chavo Guerrero against Son of Havoc and Ivelisse), and that she is the “baddest bitch in this building.”

It is amazing that Lucha Underground can have a female competitor named “Sexy Star” and yet she is way less sexualized than the stereotypical WWE Diva or TNA Knockout.

Ivelisse gets a little too frustrated from not being able to put Sexy Star away, and Sexy Star takes advantage and rolls up Ivelisse for the win. Winner: Sexy Star

Backstage Segment
Dario Cueto is backstage with Drago, saying that he unsatisfied with Drago’s performance last week in his debut match against Pentagon Jr. and Fenix. He did not get pinned, but he did not win the match either. Cueto says that Drago is the first to feel the wrath of King Cuerno, who we know practically nothing about.

Pentagon Jr. vs. Fenix
Last week, these two competitors were in an amazing triple threat match against Drago, giving a great demonstration of their arsenals. This match is sure to be just as good as the triple threat match.

I haven’t even watch more than two Fenix matches and he has already shown how great he is, with some incredible spots. Pentagon Jr. is great too, but his spots are a little less “flashy” than Fenix.

After a great match, Fenix hits a moonsault slam from the top rope (Matt Striker refers to it as the “Spanish Fly”) on Pentagon Jr. for the win. Winner: Fenix

Drago vs. King Cuerno
Matt Striker said it right when he said Drago looks “like something straight out of GWAR.” He sports a very dragon-like mask, and has a black, serpent-like tongue. Vampiro notes that Drago’s move set is more like a Japanese wrestler than a Mexican wrestler, which makes sense considering the connection Lucha Libre and Japanese wrestling have.

There is still little known about King Cuerno, but he is being called “The Hunter,” and he seems to have the strength advantage against Drago.

Drago hits an amazing pinning combination out of nowhere to defeat the debuting King Cuerno. Winner: Drago

Backstage Segment
Konnan advises Prince Puma to stay out of Johnny Mundo’s fight. Even though Prince Puma and Mundo have gotten along, Konnan says that Puma will be better off on his own, and even if the whole locker room attacks Mundo, he should stay out of it.

Big Ryck vs. Johnny Mundo
This match is very interesting from the perspective of a WWE fan. Just a few years ago, both of these men were on WWE television, and have not been seen much since, other than on the independent circuit. We barely know anything about Big Ryck other than the fact that he is a street fighter, but it seems to already be a better gimmick than his Ezekiel Jackson gimmick in WWE.

During the match, we see Prince Puma back in the locker room, and he is attacked by Cortez Castro and Cisco. Right after attacking Prince Puma, Castro and Cisco interfere in the main event match, and attack Johnny Mundo. Winner (via disqualification): Johnny Mundo

After the match, Big Ryck, Castro, and Cisco set up a table, and Big Ryck puts Johnny Mundo through the table effortlessly with a huge slam to end this episode of Lucha Underground.
