Lucha Underground Recap: All Night Long

Photo from El Rey Network

Lucha Underground is finally back. After almost five months of being away, perhaps the most unique wrestling show available today makes its return in a huge way. Tonight is all about one thing: the Lucha Underground Championship. There is only one match for the whole night, so let’s get right into the action.

If you are just getting into Lucha Underground and would like to know what happened in the first half of Season 3, check out our last recap here.

Johnny Mundo (c) vs. The Mack – Lucha Underground Championship
A few weeks before the mid-season finale, Johnny Mundo stole the Lucha Underground Championship from Sexy Star when Taya (the only female in Mundo’s stable, The Worldwide Underground) disguised herself as a fan to hit Sexy Star with brass knuckles. Meanwhile, Dario Cueto implemented a Battle of the Bulls tournament to determine the newest #1 Contender for the Lucha Underground Championship, which The Mack would end up winning.

The concept of the All Night Long match is very simple. Just like an Iron Man match in WWE, there is a set time limit where each competitor has to score more falls than his opponent. Only in Lucha Underground, the set time limit is the entire episode.

Johnny Mundo has a couple of advantages in this match. His first advantage comes in the form of experience. Mundo is the only man in this match to capture the Lucha Underground Championship, and he is one of the only people on the Lucha Underground roster to compete in an All Night Long match.

Mundo’s second advantage is his conditioning. The parkour expert has the cardio advantage, meaning he can naturally last longer than The Mack, who is larger and less physically conditioned than Mundo.

While The Mack is on the second turnbuckle, Johnny Mundo is on the outside of the ring posts avoiding his punches. After sweeping The Mack off of the apron, Mundo quickly climbs to the top turnbuckle hit his “End of the World” signature corkscrew split legged moonsault to pick up the first fall. Winner (First Fall): Johnny Mundo | Score: Mundo 1, Mack 0

Mundo rolls up The Mack near the ropes and while referee Marty Elias is looking at Mack’s shoulders, Mundo grabs the ropes to gain leverage, stealing the pin and the second fall. Winner (Second Fall): Johnny Mundo | Score: Mundo 2, Mack 0

Johnny Mundo attempts a cross body, but The Mack uses his strength advantage to catch the Lucha Underground Champion. After countering the cross body, The Mack then hits Mundo with a seated powerbomb to score the first fall he so desperately needs. Winner (Third Fall): The Mack | Score: Mundo 2, Mack 1

With 20 minutes remaining, Mundo hits a corkscrew cross body from the top turnbuckle to ringside and he seems to hurt his leg. After the show comes back from commercial, Mundo is being attended to by referees and trainers. While The Mack is taking a rest near the ropes, Mundo pops up to his feet and nails Mack with a low blow. After faking the injury, Mundo DDTs Mack onto a stretcher board to steal his third pin. Winner (Fourth Fall): Johnny Mundo | Score: Mundo 3, Mack 1

Mack turns the tables on Mundo by attacking him with that very same stretcher board. Mack takes Mundo and straps him to the board so he can push Mundo all the way down the steps. After dragging Mundo’s limp body into the ring, Mack hits the stunner to close the gap. Winner (Fifth Fall): The Mack | Score: Johnny Mundo 3, The Mack 2

After the fifth fall, Mundo crawls under the ring and PJ Black (who the Mack thinks is Mundo) runs out the other side. This confusion leads to the 2-on-1 advantage for the Worldwide Underground until Son of Havoc shows up with a couple kendo sticks. The fight goes back in the favor of Mundo, who tells the live band to play a victory song.

While the band is playing a song, the maraca player jumps from the stage onto Mundo and Black. When she gets up, she reveals herself as Sexy Star, and this advantage leads to Mack tying up the score. Winner (Sixth Fall): The Mack | Score: Johnny Mundo 3, The Mack 3

Mack jumps from a ladder to hit Mundo with a splash through a table. As time winds down, Mack gingerly covers Mundo. While the ref is counting, time expires before the pin is complete. Result: Draw

Dario Cueto appears from his office to announce that he doesn’t like ties in his temple. To fix this, there will be a rematch next week. Only one fall will be needed for the win, however, even if it takes all night long.
