Lucha Underground Recap: The Cueto Cup Continues

Photo from El Rey Network

Tonight continues Dario Cueto’s latest creation: The Cueto Cup. Starting last week, 32 luchadores compete in a single-elimination tournament. The winner will face either Johnny Mundo or Rey Mysterio for the Lucha Underground Championship at Ultima Lucha Tres. Round one continues tonight, featuring the likes of Mascarita Sagrada, Cage, and Fenix.

Opening Segment
Fenix pulls into the Temple when he is approached by ring announcer Melissa Santos. Santos seems to have a crush on Fenix, and she hopes that he wins the whole thing. Fenix responds that when he does win, it will be for her. The camera pans to a nearby window, where Marty “The Moth” Martinez is creepily watching the conversation unfold. Apparently, this relationship between Fenix and Santos angers him enough to break a window with his head.

Vinnie Massaro vs. Cage – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
Last week, Cage visited the man who helped give him his powerful gauntlet. While Cage cannot wear the gauntlet during the match, it is supposed to give him an incredible god-like power (like Matanza Cueto). Vinnie Massaro is not a Lucha Underground regular, but he is essentially a very greasy Italian man (there’s even a big stain on his shirt). Massaro has some in-ring ability, but this matchup is not in his favor.

Massaro attempts to use Cage’s gauntlet as a weapon, but he misses. An enraged Cage assaults Massaro and finishes him off with a sit-out brainbuster. He puts the gauntlet on after the match and starts brutally attacking Massaro. After busting him open, Cage chokeslams Massaro from the apron to the floor. Winner: Cage | Eliminated: Vinnie Massaro

Marty “The Moth” Martinez vs. Saltador – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
Both competitors in this match are, to put it bluntly, strange. Marty “The Moth” Martinez has a history of being mentally unstable and a stalker, from his relationship with his sister, Mariposa, to his unhealthy obsession with Melissa Santos. Saltador is from the Rabbit Tribe, and a win tonight could make up for his partner, Mala Suerte’s, loss last week to the Mack in the opening match of the Cueto Cup.

Marty “The Moth” Martinez takes advantage of Saltador’s unnecessary celebration to hit him with a very unique powerslam turned into a Codebreaker to advance to Round Two. Winner: Marty “The Moth” Martinez | Eliminated: Saltador

Backstage Segment
After Saltador’s loss, the Rabbit Tribe is not looking too good in the Cueto Cup. Paul London and Mala Suerte approach Mascarita Sagrada before his match and ask him to lead the Tribe. Sagrada declines, but London and Suerte still view him as a divine figure.

We switch gears back to Marty “The Moth” Martinez, who is in a fairly dark room with dozens of photos of Melissa Santos plastered to the walls. He is interrupted by his sister Mariposa, who appears from out of nowhere. She tells him to think “family first,” then she slaps him a few times before walking away. Once she leaves, Martinez is back to lusting over Santos.

Pindar (w/Kobra Moon) vs. Mascarita Sagrada – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
It has been a big couple of weeks for Kobra Moon’s legion of lizard-themes luchadores. Last week, Drago’s betrayal of Aerostar and Fenix led to Pindar and Vibora capturing the Lucha Underground Trios Championships. Tonight, Pindar has a chance to get one step closer towards the Lucha Underground Championship against one of the most entertaining luchadores there is.

Pindar toys with Sagrada for a good portion of the match, but after Sagrada slaps Kobra Moon, Pindar is done playing around. After a huge superkick, Pindar puts Sagrada away with a unique wheelbarrow sit-out facebuster. Winner: Pindar | Eliminated: Mascarita Sagrada

Fenix vs. Mariposa – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
This is an interesting match, because whoever wins moves on to face Marty “The Moth” Martinez in the second round. If Mariposa wins, it would be a brother versus sister match, and with how strange both of them are, who knows how that could pan out. If Fenix wins, the subject turns to Melissa Santos. Fenix and Santos just started their romantic relationship earlier tonight, but Martinez has been obsessed with her ever since he entered the Temple.

Mariposa shows off some incredible lucha libre ability, but Fenix is just one step ahead of her. Fenix catches her in mid-air and shifts Mariposa into position for the Fenix Driver, penciling his name in the second round. Marty “The Moth” Martinez tries to attack Fenix after the match, but the former Trios Champion fends both him and his sister off. Winner: Fenix | Eliminated: Mariposa
