MILWAUKEE — Jacob Misiorowski left Wednesday after throwing one warmup pitch for the eighth inning because of a cramp in his right quadriceps, the report says, marking the second time in his past three starts that cramping has forced him from a game.
The right-hander told reporters he was not overly worried, saying, “Probably the exact same, but it was the quad this time instead of the hamstring. Nothing we haven’t seen before, so it’ll be fine. I’m ready to go,” per the report.
Misiorowski struck out 10, allowed four hits and issued no walks, departing with a 1-0 lead, the report says. The Padres rallied to win when Gavin Sheets hit a three-run homer off Abner Uribe with two outs in the ninth inning. The report adds Misiorowski has not allowed a run in his past three outings.
The report notes the 24-year-old has recorded at least eight strikeouts in each of his last five starts, a streak that ties Ben Sheets for the second-longest in Brewers history; Corbin Burnes holds the franchise record. Misiorowski leads major league pitchers with 80 strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 2.12, the report says.
Velocity has been a major feature of his recent work, the report says: he throws the hardest of any starting pitcher in the big leagues and had 10 pitches of at least 103 mph against the Yankees, including three at 103.6 mph, the highest mark for a starter since 2008. He threw 40 pitches of 100 mph or higher on Wednesday, his third straight game with 40 or more, and struck out Nick Castellanos with a 103.2-mph fastball on his 93rd pitch. Manager Pat Murphy downplayed the cramping, saying, “He puts so much into it. … We have people here to get it under control. I don’t think it’s a concern,” per the report.
