Second Week of Auditions on The Voice — Who Was Blocked?

The Voice

It’s the second week of auditions on NBC’s The Voice ,” and Adam is still wearing that interesting choice of shirt. As the judges continue to listen to the blind auditions, one thing is evident — Kelly Clarkson is a gem and once Alicia Keyes has her eyes on a contestant it’s hard to stop her. So let’s get into The Voice auditions for this week:

Christiana Danielle, 22, Fort Wayne, Indiana: Christiana recently graduated and has a social work degree. She’s taking a gap year and is now auditioning for The Voice. Her mother was a Christian rapper and even lays down a few lines during her segment. Christiana loves Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald. She talks about a throat infection when she couldn’t breathe. Doctors told her that she couldn’t sing. She felt like she died inside, but worked hard at her recovery. She sings “Hotline Bling,” and Adam is the only one to turn around for awhile, before Kelly finally hits her button. Alicia also hits her button. Adam calls her one of the best singers he has ever heard in his life. Wow. Christiana picks Alicia.

Brett Hunter, 30: Moved in with his brother to focus on his career and Brett talks about how he’s grateful to him. Without hearing him sing yet, the long-haired singer reminds me a bit of Bo Bice, but once he starts singing “She’s a Bad Mama Jama,” the similarities end at the hair. He has a bit of a nasal twang and the judges take time listening to him with Blake turning out once he hits that high note. Brett is Team Blake. Blake finishes by saying “I have the next Tiny Tim!” Kelly thinks he means the character from A Christmas Carol.

Jamai, 28, Chester, Pennsylvania: Jami makes a living performing singing telegrams. He was raised by his grandmother who was shown on the video wishing him good luck (tissues anyone?). He auditions with “U Got It Bad.” Alicia and Kelly simultaneously hit their buttons. Jami picks Alicia.

I repeat: Kelly Clarkson is adorable on this show (recap continues after this…)

Mitch Cardoza, 22, Dartmouth, Massachusetts: Loves reggae and went to Berklee College of Music. Talks about how his parents sang to him when he was younger. His father, who is a self-confessed crier, says he’ll shed tears when his son is on stage.  Auditions with “No Woman, No Cry.” Hard to understand some words, which I know Blake doesn’t like. Unfortunately, no one turns. Alicia wants to hear more of his style instead of sounding like the artist.

Mia Boostrom, 24, Boston, Massachusetts: tells the story about a piano bought in her home, but she didn’t start singing until middle school. Talks about negative comments she received about her looks during a competition and the effect it had on her. She left music but has since returned. Can I just say that this girl is gorgeous? “If one person turns for me, that’s enough,” she said. Auditions with “Pillowtalk.” I started getting nervous that nobody was going to turn for her when Adam finally turns. Team Adam. “You are going to be the best one chair turn this season,” said Adam.

Jackie Foster, 21, Boston, Massachusetts: Was once a munchkin in the Wizard of Oz in school. When she got older she won a scholarship to Berklee College of Music. Jackie auditions with “What About Us.” Kelly hits her button first. Jackie hits her high notes and Alicia hits her button. Jackie picks Kelly.

Kayla Woodson, 23, Waggaman, Louisiana: Kayla works at the Country Music Hall of Fame and daydreams about the one day she’ll finally be in the Hall of Fame. Auditions with “Turn on the Radio” – from the first note she has a great country sound. She is magnificent and so far one of my favorites of the night. Holy smokes, nobody turned!  Blake said she overshot some of the notes. That’s why I’m not a coach on The Voice.

Reid Umstattd, 34, Austin, Texas: The bartender works at his father-in-law’s restaurant. He talks about his love for his wife Janna, who he met while on the road. In 2014, he quit the band to stay closer to home and worked at the bar. He auditions with “Take Me To The Pilot.” Adam hits his button, followed by Alicia. Adam is really digging him. Reid picks Adam.

Jorge Eduardo, 23, Guadalajara, Mexico: Starts off his segment with some beatboxing, but can he sing? His dad is a Mariachi singer. Jorge was on The Voice in Mexico and had all four chairs turn and he came in fourth. He always wanted to be in this version of The Voice. He auditions with “Despacito.” Kelly, who claims she’s looking for something specific, hits her button almost immediately and gets up and starts dancing. Nobody else turns. Jorge is Team Kelly.

Jamella, 21, Mission Viejo, California: I don’t understand why this segment wasn’t shown, but Kelly and Blake both hit their buttons for her. Raised by a single mom who moved around for jobs. She picked Kelly.

Angel Bonilla auditioned with “Lay Me Down,” and was picked by Adam. Born Carlos, this 31-year-old she shares her story about her transformation and coming out to her parents.

Austin Giorgio, 21, Rochester, New York: Looking like he stepped out of the Rat Pack, this young man talks about his love of dance. He even talks about Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra and his dad who was part of a jazz band. Auditions with “How Sweet It Is.” Blake turns his chair around for the crooner. Right before his segment ends, Kelly turns around too.  Austin chooses Blake.

The final contestant of the night is Johnny Bliss, 26, of New York, New York: Johnny moved to the Dominican Republic when he was getting bullied and felt at home there. He came out when he came back and his grandmother supports him. He auditions with “Preciosa.” Adam hits his button and blocks Kelly. She hits her button, but Adam has to show her she’s blocked. All four turn around, although Kelly can’t have him. This guy is awesome. He’s crying and I think Kelly is too — haha.  Johnny picks Alicia.

Blind auditions continue tomorrow.
