An appeals court in the Dominican Republic has ordered a new trial for Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco, who was convicted earlier this year on charges related to the sexual abuse of a minor. The court’s decision, announced Tuesday, nullifies the prior conviction and mandates a retrial in the case.

Franco, one of Major League Baseball’s most promising young talents, had been under legal scrutiny in the Dominican Republic following allegations involving a minor. The initial trial concluded with a conviction, but Franco’s legal team appealed the verdict, arguing procedural errors and concerns about due process during the original proceedings.

The appeals court reviewed the case and determined that sufficient issues were present to warrant a new trial. The court did not release detailed reasoning for its decision but emphasized the need for a fair and complete examination of all evidence and testimony. No date has been announced yet for the retrial.

Franco has remained away from Major League Baseball activities since the allegations surfaced. The Tampa Bay Rays have not issued a statement on the appeals court ruling. Similarly, Major League Baseball has continued its investigation into the matter under its personal conduct policy but has not announced any disciplinary actions.

The situation marks an ongoing legal and professional challenge for the 23-year-old athlete. Franco, a high-profile player for Tampa Bay since his MLB debut in 2021, signed a long-term contract extension with the club that same year. However, his involvement in the legal proceedings in the Dominican Republic has overshadowed his playing career as he remains on administrative leave.

Further developments in the case will likely impact both Franco’s legal status and his future with the Rays and Major League Baseball. Until the new trial concludes and investigations are completed, his return to professional play remains uncertain.
