Bobby Okereke has become a central figure in Carolina’s early-season turnaround and was named Africa Player of the Week for Week 6, according to the report. The linebacker — who has deep family ties to Nigeria and has been involved in NFL development work on the continent — has shown marked improvement since joining the Panthers after a mixed stint with the New York Giants.
In Carolina’s 25-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, Okereke recorded eight tackles, two passes defended and a sack, seven of those tackles coming solo. His sack on Tanner McKee came on the game’s first play for an 11-yard loss, one of the standout moments from the win, according to the report.
Across his first five games with the Panthers, Okereke accumulated a sack, a forced fumble, an interception and four passes defended, figures that the report says put him at or near several of the totals he posted in his final season with the Giants. His early production has coincided with a stronger defensive tone for Carolina.
The Panthers have improved year over year following a 2023 campaign that produced just two victories, the report notes. After finishing 8-9 last season, Carolina sits atop the NFC South at this stage of the campaign.
The report also highlighted several other players of Nigerian descent and African ties who made key plays this week. Tennessee’s Chimere Dike returned a punt 58 yards early in the fourth quarter to set up a scoring drive in the Titans’ 26-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts and totaled 118 return yards on five kick returns. Titans teammate Oluwafemi Oladejo scored on a blocked punt, and Osa Odighizuwa recorded a sack in the San Francisco 49ers’ 23-17 win over the Washington Commanders, according to the report.
Additional mentions included Emeka Egbuka’s touchdown for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a 26-19 overtime loss to Pittsburgh, Seattle’s Nick Emmanwori posting seven tackles and a sack in a 17-14 loss to Denver, Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s 134 yards on 12 receptions in a Week 6 defeat, Mo Alie-Cox scoring for the Colts, Zimbabwe-born Nate Landman totaling 10 tackles in the Rams’ 18-16 loss, and Kwity Paye recording a sack for the Las Vegas Raiders in a 33-30 loss to Buffalo, according to the report.
