Lucha Underground S2E13 Recap: Monster Meets Monster

On last week’s episode of Lucha Underground, we saw the returns of Killshot and Argenis, a winner of an Aztec medallion, and a match in the Trios Championship tournament.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have learned more about the man behind Killshot. He used to be in the military as a sniper, and after ending his service, he has decided to make a name for himself by fighting in the Temple. With this newfound motivation and character, Killshot defeated the returning Argenis in an impressive return.

A new luchador, Daga, made his debut against Texano in a match for an Aztec medallion. We knew nothing about Daga going into the match, but his strong style offense adds a change of pace to the Lucha Underground roster. This wasn’t enough to defeat the former AAA Mega Champion, however, and Texano won the match as well as the medallion.

To main event the evening, the unique team of Taya, Cage, and Johnny Mundo would take on Dragon Azteca Jr., Rey Mysterio, and Prince Puma. Thanks to the dysfunctional nature of pairing rivals together, Mysterio and his partners would take advantage and advance to the semifinals of the Trios tournament.

Tonight features another match in the Trios tournament, which will see the Disciples of Death seeking their second Trios Championship title reign.

Opening Segment
Drago, Aerostar, and Fenix are in Dario Cueto’s office regarding the Trios tournament. Cueto originally thinks of making the three of them a team, but since they were a team last year, he decides to change things up. Cueto teams Fenix with PJ Black and Jack Evans, while Aerostar and Drago will compete against each other for the second Aztec medallion.

Aerostar vs. Drago – Aztec Medallion Match
As stated above, the winner of this match will win one of the seven Aztec medallions (the first was won last week by Texano). The owners of the medallions will compete in a seven-way match for the Gift of the Gods Championship, guaranteeing its owner a Lucha Underground Championship opportunity; all they have to do is cash it in one week in advance.

Aerostar and Drago have a history in the Temple, which was highlighted in a “Best of 5” series. Drago would win the series, as well as a “unique opportunity” from Dario Cueto, and ultimately ended up banning Drago from the Temple (he has obviously returned since then).

Aerostar hits a springboard splash on Drago to pick up the victory and the second Aztec medallion. Winner: Aerostar

Backstage Segment
Taya has talked to Dario Cueto, and she convinced him to give Johnny Mundo an opportunity for an Aztec medallion. Next week, Mundo will face Cage in a steel cage match for the third Aztec medallion.

Fenix, PJ Black, & Jack Evans vs. The Disciples of Death (w/Catrina) – Trios Tournament Match
Fenix finds himself in the third unique team in the Trios Tournament, with Evans and Black as his partners. Evans and Black are allies, but Fenix has no correlation to either of his partners, so there is less synergy than their opponents. The Disciples of Death have worked very well together, along with the guidance of Catrina, but they have recently found little to no success. This match in the Trios tournament could help elevate the Disciples of Death to what they were when they debuted last year.

Fenix takes the role of captain for his team, and coaches his team through an impressive victory, meaning that his team is now in the semifinals. This also means that the Disciples of Death have failed yet again. Winners: Fenix, PJ Black, & Jack Evans

Backstage Segment
Dario Cueto announces that next week will be the finals of the Trios tournament. Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, and Angélico will face the three other victorious teams in a four-way elimination match for the Trios Championship.

Matanza Cueto (c) (w/Dario Cueto) vs. Mil Muertes (w/Catrina) – Lucha Underground Championship (No Disqualification)
Matanza Cueto has perhaps been the most dominant competitor in the Temple, but he has not faced the “Man of 1,000 Deaths,” Mil Muertes. Vampiro describes this perfectly as “monster meets monster.”

The two competitors fight to the top of the stands, and it leads to Mil Muertes hitting a Flatliner on Matanza, sending both through the ceiling to Dario Cueto’s office. The referee has no choice but to end the match, meaning that Matanza retains the Lucha Underground Championship. Result: No Contest
