The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has submitted a formal complaint to FIFA, alleging that the Democratic Republic of Congo fielded ineligible players during the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. According to the NFF, at least nine players who featured for DR Congo in qualification matches may not have met the eligibility requirements set forth by world football’s governing body.

Nigeria’s concern stems from the potential impact of these players on the integrity of the qualification process. If proven, the use of ineligible players could result in sanctions against DR Congo, including match forfeitures. That, in turn, could alter the standings in their qualifying group and potentially revive Nigeria’s chances of progressing to the tournament, which is set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

A spokesperson for the Nigeria Football Federation indicated that documentation and related evidence have been submitted to FIFA’s disciplinary committee, which is now expected to initiate a review. FIFA has yet to publicly comment on the matter or confirm the timeline for any potential ruling.

Nigeria, a six-time World Cup participant, finds itself in a tight battle for qualification from its group. The Super Eagles have had a mixed campaign so far, with dropped points in earlier matches putting their qualification hopes in jeopardy. The NFF’s complaint suggests that administrative oversight or misconduct by another competing nation could be a determining factor in the final qualification outcomes.

The DR Congo Football Association has not made a statement in response to the allegations. Under FIFA regulations, national federations can be penalized for fielding players who are ineligible due to matters such as nationality, previous caps for other nations, or paperwork inconsistencies.

This development has drawn widespread attention across African football, with implications for Group standings and qualification paths. Stakeholders now await FIFA’s investigation results, which could influence team selections and match credibility in upcoming fixtures. Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
