Ward vs Kovalev 2 Preview

Ward vs Kovalev 2 Preview on the TnS Boxing Podcast – The 44th edition of the TalknShoot Boxing Podcast is here and as we enter the month of June the subject focuses on boxing’s talent-filled 175 pound weight class.

June has been touted as a big month for the light heavyweight division and the TnS Podcast dwells on the recent Adonis Stevenson re-match with Andrzej Fonfara that took place on June 3rd at Montreal’s Bell Centre. Fonfara took Stevenson the full twelve rounds in a hard fought fight their first time out back in May of 2014 but this time Stevenson came out throwing bombs that ended Fonfara’s night early. The sizzling performance by Stevenson in his eighth WBC world title defense will push his name to the top of the list of those awaiting the winner of Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev’s second meeting this coming June 17th.

HBO pay-per-view hosted the first meeting between the two men this past November, and the controversial 114-113 judges decision favoring Ward set off calls for a second bout immediately from Kovalev and his promotional team. The bout came together behind the scenes without a lot of public hoopla and with the fight less than two weeks away the fight has not had a major promotional push as of yet.

The first fight delivered a tense, hard fought bout that did not give the average fan a lot of highlight reel material. Somewhere in the fallout of the first fight the two men went from rival competitors to two guys that just do not like each other. The first bout attracted roughly 200k buys, which is low for a big-time boxing pay-per-view and expectations are not set very high for the second meeting.

Ward vs Kovalev 2 Preview on the TnS Boxing Podcast

Boxing pay-per-views are always a hot topic here at the TnS Podcast and we look at several of HBO’s offerings.

First, the numbers are coming in for the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr bout from this past May 6th and the number of buys is hovering right around 1 million. That is a solid return for Alvarez, who headlined 2 pay-per-views in 2016 whose total sales did not amount to seven figures.

Alvarez and his handlers at Golden Boy Promotions are set to make another bundle of money as “Canelo” is already signed to fight Gennady Golovkin this coming September 16th on HBO pay-per-view. The match between the two men has been talked about for a long time and it came as a bit of a surprise this past May when Alvarez announced he would fight Golovkin immediately after he had dispatched Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Though Alvarez vs JCC Jr did get to 1 million PPV buys it is likely that many of those buyers were not happy with the bout the two men delivered. In that respect the announcement of Triple “G” as Alvarez’ next opponent right away was a stroke of genius by GBP that helped put a damper on criticism of the showing against JCC Jr.
