Naismith Player of the Year Award Hotlist

1.) Denzel Valentine, Michigan State

You’re not getting sick of him yet, are you? Well, you’d better be used to it because he’s still averaging 18.8 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 7.7 assists per game which is, well…absurd. He’s the favorite for the Naismith Player of the Year Award and he’s leading the top-ranked team in the country right now. Life is good for Valentine, no doubt about it.

2.) Buddy Hield, Oklahoma

He’s the most dangerous scorer in the Big 12, putting up career highs in every major statistical category on offense, while also leading the Sooners into the national spotlight and a top-ten ranking. A big part of his success is running mate Isaiah Cousins, but the reigning Big 12 Player of the Year has been nothing short of spectacular this season, thus far.

3.) Marcus Paige, North Carolina

Finally healthy now, Paige started things off by being his usual dynamic self against Maryland in North Carolina’s signature home win. Best of all, he’s been insanely efficient from every spot on the floor and has seamlessly integrated himself back into the flow of Roy Williams’ rotations. If he keeps this up, UNC might be the title favorite.

4.) Melo Trimble, Maryland

While his numbers in many categories have actually taken a dip from his freshman campaign, Trimble is twice the player he was a year ago, mainly evidenced by the fact that he’s nearly doubled his assists numbers and he’s increased his offensive efficiency. He’s the best guard in the country at getting to the free throw line, as he showed UConn at Madison Square Garden, going 14-for-15 from the charity stripe.

5.) Kris Dunn, Providence

Don’t let his numbers against Boston College fool you–he was injured, duh–Dunn is still putting up one of the most impressive seasons in the country while leading Providence into the Top 25. The question for him will be, of course, health and whether or not the Friars can keep winning at a rate that keeps him in the discussion for this award.
