UFC 224 Vitor Belfort vs. Lyoto Machida Fight Recap
UFC 224 Vitor Belfort vs. Lyoto Machida Fight Recap

UFC 224 kicked off with  a legacy matchup between Vitor Belfort and Lyoto Machida as the first fight on the main card from  Rio de Janiero, Brazil.  This was a quick fight with just a few sets of blows in the first round and a quick unbelievable KO by Lyoto Machida in the second round.  Machida knocked out Vitor Belfort in spectacular fashion with a front kick to the chin.  Vitor Belfort fell back like a tree being cut down by a lumberjack, straight to his back, and completely unconscious.

Round 1

In the first round Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort came out circling the center of the octagon.  Lyoto used a front kick to try to feel out his range a bit while Vitor Belfort looked as if he wanted to counterstrike, but really didn’t do anything, except throw three combos that didn’t land.  Machida was able to land a hook kick to Vitor Belfort’s chin which seemed to wobble him a bit.  In my opinion the first round definitely goes to Lyoto Machida for activity and landing the hook kick.

Round 2

In the second round both fighters came out circling the center of the octagon again for only 10 to 15 seconds when Lyoto Machida starting turning his leg as if he was going to throw a front high kick, and out of nowhere he threw a front kick with his back leg straight to Vitor Belfort’s chin, knocking him out.  Vitor fell straight back onto his back completely unconscious.  Lyoto Machida did not have to follow up at all as he just stood in the center of the octagon, hands on hips, admiring his handy work.

Conclusion

This was an outstanding knockout by Lyoto Machida.  It is sad to see Vitor Belfort go out with another knock out in his last fight in the UFC after such an outstanding career, but hopefully we won’t see him again in the octagon, and we bid farewell to a great and classic competitor.
