Two basketballs commemorating the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2000 and 2001 NBA Championship victories, both signed by the late Kobe Bryant and other team members, were sold at auction for a combined total exceeding $800,000. The 2000 championship basketball sold for $508,000, while the 2001 version fetched $317,500 during a recent Sotheby’s auction.
These rare items are significant not only for their association with the Lakers’ early 2000s dynasty, but also because they bear the signature of one of basketball’s most iconic players, Kobe Bryant. Bryant, who spent his entire 20-season NBA career with the Lakers, played a central role in the franchise’s three consecutive championships from 2000 to 2002.
The 2000 championship ball is particularly notable given that it marked the Lakers’ first NBA title since 1988, ushering in a new era of dominance led by the duo of Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. The 2001 ball commemorates a season in which the Lakers lost only one game during the playoffs, finishing with a 15-1 postseason record—a performance widely regarded as one of the most dominant in NBA history.
Memorabilia bearing Kobe Bryant’s signature has garnered increased attention from collectors in recent years. Bryant’s tragic death in a helicopter crash in January 2020 heightened interest in items connected to his storied career. Signed championship items, particularly those connected to pivotal moments in NBA history, continue to be among the most sought after pieces at sports auctions.
Sotheby’s did not disclose the buyers of the basketballs. However, auction analysts note that sales of this magnitude reflect the enduring legacy of Kobe Bryant and the enduring appeal of the Lakers’ championship teams. With the continued interest in sports memorabilia and Bryant’s influence on the game, such items are likely to retain their significance and value among collectors and fans alike.
