Arrieta Calls Out Harper, Eovaldi Needs Surgery and More

Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

It’s not often that a Major League Baseball player will call out a teammate, especially not a superstar, but that’s exactly what happened Monday night. After a 5-1 loss to the Mets, Phillies’ pitcher Jake Arrieta — one of the team’s veterans — criticized Bryce Harper for throwing a fit about a bad strike zone and getting ejected earlier in the game. Elsewhere, the Red Sox got bad injury news, a position player might be the Orioles’ best pitcher, and good news for Jacob deGrom.

Jake Arrieta understands Bryce Harper’s value to the team. But maybe some of this should have been said in private?

It’s been a dismal start to the season for the defending champion Boston Red Sox. That changed somewhat over the weekend with a sweep of the Rays, but it came with bad injury news.

Position players pitching is always fun, but it seems especially fun when a guy like Jesus Sucre pitches a 1-2-3 inning when his teammates — who are paid to get people out — had given up 12 runs in the previous eight innings.

Finally, some good injury news: It turns out Jacob deGrom isn’t seriously hurt and just had a bit of discomfort. He appears to be back in the fold for the Mets.

Unfortunately, not everyone is that lucky. Pirates pitcher Nick Burdi, who already had Tommy John surgery in 2017, had baseball’s latest cringeworthy injury.
