Interview with Chris Gronkowski: NFL Preseason

GetMoreSports: NFL season win totals have been out for a few months, and the markets have had time to mature. Looking at the full list, which team are you looking to bet the over and why?

Chris Gronkowski: I am going to make this easy and go with New England here. When was the last time that New England didn’t win 11 games in a season…a long, long time ago. The Patriots have now had eight consecutive seasons with 12 wins or more. There isn’t much more to say, everyone knows what [Tom] Brady and [Bill] Belichick can do.

GMS: Which season win total are you looking to bet the under and why?

Gronk: Well, I was surprised to see Cleveland’s over/under at 5.5. It is tough to turn an 0-16 team around and win six games. In fact, the Browns have won more than six games just once in the last 10 seasons, and that came in their seven-win season in 2014. Over the last three seasons, the Dawg Pound is just 4-44

GMS: Who is going to win each of the eight divisions?

Gronk: Going with mostly chalk, but these are my fearless predictions.

  • AFC West: Chargers (+115)
  • AFC East: Patriots (-800)
  • AFC North: Steelers (-260)
  • AFC South: Texans (+185)
  • NFC West: Rams (-225)
  • NFC East: Eagles (-165)
  • NFC North: Vikings (-110)
  • NFC South: Saints (+140)

GMS: What do you think about the AFC race, which is possibly closer than it has been in a long time. Who is going to win the AFC?

Gronk: Patriots (+230) will take the conference again. They have veteran leadership and a coach that can win. It will be hard to pick any other team to win the AFC until Brady retires.

GMS: The Eagles are also favored (+260) to repeat and win the NFC again. Which team will emerge from that conference?

Gronk: This is a tough call. Everyone is high on the Rams coming into the season, but it takes a lot more than hype to get to the Super Bowl. The Eagles are coming in hot as well and have their star QB back.

If Carson Wentz is healthy and doesn’t fall into a somewhat secondary sophomore slump, the Eagles deserve to be the favorite, but I think the NFC is going to play out a little different than everyone is expecting.

GMS: What is your best preseason betting tip?

Gronk: Bet on running (mobile) quarterbacks in Week 4 of the preseason. When the second- and third-string guys get into the game, it means that the second- and third-string offensive line is going to be in the game as well. In turn, the quarterback will have very little time in the pocket and will be scrambling a lot. Take a team with QB that can scramble and you will have will a good chance of winning.

GMS: Switching gears from NFL to college for our final question. Your alma mater, Arizona, has a season win total of 7.5. It looks like sharp bettors are siding with the over given the heavy juice on that side. Are you taking the over or under?

Gronk: I haven’t been able to follow Arizona football much. Unfortunately, the games start so late here that I am sleeping before the first quarter is over. Arizona has a new head coach, which makes it hard to win when you have yet to recruit many of your own style players. This could be a tough season for Arizona.
